As a UK online consumer you have all the rights of return as you
do when buying instore. This is fully outlined in the Sales
of Goods Act. The Distance
Selling Rules also applies, which gives you the right to return
most goods within seven days, for a complete refund, even if you
can find no fault with the product. However there are a few things
you should bare in mind. Firstly, you should always return an item
within four weeks, otherwise the merchant will view the item as
accepted. However, if you have bought clothes and they do not fit,
or you have bought a electrical component which does not fit into
a system, without consulting the manual or merchant, then there
is no legal obligation for the merchant to provide a full refund.
But, if the item is faulty, then you should return the item to the
merchant and not the manufacturer, as the contract is between the
customer and the merchant. Paying with a credit card provides extra
coverage, as the credit card company is also liable to cover any
faulty goods purchased. You do not need to have the receipt to claim
a refund, but proof of purchase, such as a bank or credit card statement.
Traders who operate on auction sites also need to comply to the
Sales of Goods Act, but one off individual sellers do not.
