'Phishing' is a word which can be interchanged with either 'spoof'
or 'fake'. It's either an email or a website which claims to be
from a popular company, but it's actual source is from a fraudster.
The email will usually purport to be from a bank and suggest there
is some kind of error with your account and could you please enter
your details to rectify the issue. While most people will not fall
for the ruse, it still snags plenty.
The 'phishing' website can be far more difficult to spot. Again
it will be linked to from the email, but the email will probably
be more subtle in content. The 'phishing' website will probably
have a URL address which is very similar to the official site and
will look identical. Of course the aim of the site will be to steal
the login details entered.
'Phishing' is therefore a sizable problem for any online shopper.
If they receive any 'Phishing' email which purports to be from the
same bank or merchant they use. Then there is a distinct possibility
of credit card details being stolen.
