Online commerce / shopping began long before the World Wide Web
was invented. The man credited with beginning online shopping was
Michael Aldrich in 1979. Some facts about Michael Aldrich are provided

- Spent thirty eight years in the information technology industry,
and invented the Teleputer.
- The Teleputer was a system used in many early online sales.
The first business to business online sale was conducted by Thomson
holidays in 1981 (UK), and the first sales to a home shopper (Mrs
Jane Snowball) was by Tesco in 1984.
Berners Lee only authorised commercial use of the World Wide Web
in 1991. By 1994/1995 companies such as PizzaHut were taking orders
online and Amazon and eBay were being founded.
